So I've just moved to Los Angeles, the second largest city in the U.S. (though only 1/2 the size of the largest, New York City) and it's time to try to find out what's underground.
For my first trip I headed into some of the channels that carry the tributaries of Ballona Creek, which was once an above-ground, all-natural watercourse. Many of the storm drains carrying the water that supplied the creek still follow something close to their natural, pre-urban route, and what's left of Ballona Creek still feeds into the Pacific near Santa Monica.
